Media Tech Teacher is District's First Impact Award Winner

View complete gallery.
Following the tragic loss of Timberview Assistant Football Coach Cody McCarty in October, members of Mansfield ISD and the community searched for ways to show support to Timberview High School.

John Tarrant, Media Tech Teacher at Ben Barber Career Tech Academy, and his TV Production class wanted to send a message to Timberview High School that the entire district cared about them and was standing behind them. Using their creativity and resources, they proved that video can be an incredibly powerful tool.

According to Tarrant, their original idea was to create a video to show on the jumbotron at the Timberview football game, but as his students became more excited about the project, it evolved into a masterful video message that would impact the Mansfield ISD community in a big way.

The video features students and staff from across the district, who stood united to send one strong message about Mansfield ISD – "We are Family."

Tarrant produced the video project, but gives a great deal of credit to his TV Studio Production Class, and one student in particular.

“Colin Tate has been awesome,” Tarrant said of the senior from Frontier High School. “He used to go to Timberview, so he still had a lot of really strong ties.”

As a Media Tech Teacher, Tarrant works to show students HOW to tell a story, but it is up to them to uncover the stories that will make a true impact on others. Tarrant admits that teaching such a specialized class certainly has its distinct challenges and rewards.

“There’s really no set way to do it – it’s not like math,” said Tarrant. “Certain kids might want to have a career as a news broadcaster and some might want to be a hot shot director and producer in California, but you just have to find a way with every single kid to find their niche.”

Tarrant works to identify the unique strengths in each of his students in hopes that he can help them channel their talent. His love for teaching does not go unnoticed by his students and fellow educators, especially Stephanie Mills, AV/Communication and Video/Production teacher. Mills was new to Mansfield ISD this school year and was quickly impressed by Tarrant's work ethic and commitment to the success of his students. As soon as she heard about The Impact Award, she submitted his name as a nominee.

“Over the first semester of school I saw how much passion Mr. Tarrant has instilled in his kids,” Mills said. “That really struck me being new here, how important it is that they bonded together in a time of tragedy. I just wanted him to be recognized and honored for it.”

Upon receiving the district’s very first Impact Award, Tarrant was overwhelmed and quickly used his special moment to give a shout out to his students.

“It makes me feel good that my students want to work hard for me and help their teacher look good some days,” he joked.

On behalf of the MISD Administration, congratulations to John Tarrant, our very first Impact Award Winner!

The Impact Award was established to recognize individual staff members, departments, campuses or other groups that have promoted teamwork and unity by initiating a program or event that made a positive impact within Mansfield ISD and the community. Impact Award winners may be nominated by staff, students or community members.

Winners are selected each month throughout the school year. Staff members who receive The Impact Award are eligible for other district honors.

Helping Over 14,000 Smiles

Guest post by Beth Light, President 2011-12 MISD Council of PTAs
According to a surgeon general’s report, tooth decay is the most common chronic childhood disease. Additionally, school nurses say it’s common for children in our community to not own a toothbrush. To help fight this problem and in support of National Children’s Dental Health Month, the Children’s Oral Health Coalition, led by Cook Children’s, hosted its fifth annual Drive for a Smile toothbrush collection drive in February.
Mansfield ISD was asked to participate in the Drive for a Smile toothbrush drive during the month of February. Jane Latimer of Cook Children's coordinated with the Mansfield ISD Council of PTAs to inform the schools of the drive.

For the last two years, the MISD schools have participated. Local PTAs coordinate the donation drive with the help of student groups, counselors, teachers, school and central office administrators, and various MISD departments. This year, our schools and departments donated over 14,000 toothbrushes.

Our largest donor was Mansfield High School. Coach Patton coordinated the toothbrush drive with the assistance of the Teen Leadership classes. Students visited classrooms and discussed the importance of the toothbrush drive. MHS donated over 5,000 toothbrushes.

We want to recognize and say thanks to all the MISD schools and MISD Departments for their hard work and generous donations. And, a big THANK YOU to all the students and parents who donated.

We want to offer a special recognition for these schools:
Elementary Schools:
  • Nancy Neal - over 2,000
  • Janet Brockett - over 1,000
  • Roberta Tipps - over 600
  • Willie Brown - over 500
Intermediate Schools:
  • Della Icenhower - over 200
  • Cross Timbers - over 100
Middle Schools:
  • Danny Jones - over 400
  • Brooks Wester - over 200
High Schools:
  • Mansfield - over 5,000
  • Summit - over 600

Mansfield Early Childhood PTA donated over 400.
Mansfield ISD Council of PTAs and Cook Children's say THANK YOU to all the schools that participated, spent the time coordinating the toothbrush drive and to everyone who donated a toothbrush. We really appreciate all the time and effort spent on the toothbrush drive.

STAAR EOC 15 Percent Rule Survey Results

We recently asked the community to weigh on a pressing question related to the STAAR end-of-course (EOC) 15% issue. Here's what we found out and what happened.

Background
The State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR™) replaced the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS).

STAAR™ includes the 12 end-of-course (EOC) assessments mandated by SB 1031 in 2007 and the new grade 3–8 assessments mandated by HB 3 in 2009. The new tests will be implemented in the 2011–2012 school year.

On Friday, February 17, 2012, the Texas Commissioner of Education, Robert Scott, announced that he is giving school districts the option to waive for one year the requirement that the students' EOC score count as 15% of the final course average.

Mansfield ISD sought feedback from the community on the 15% rule that is now optional for districts through the use of an online survey that ran Thursday morning, February 23 thru Monday afternoon, February 27.

The survey asked the following: Should Mansfield ISD include STAAR end-of-course (EOC) exam results at 15% of the final course grade in 2011-12? [Doing so may have an impact on course credit, GPA, class rank, and UIL eligibility.]

The results were overwhelmingly against including EOC results this year:
  • 10% (426) - Yes, MISD should include EOC exam results at 15% of the final course grade this year.
  • 79% (3220) - No, MISD should not include EOC exam results at 15% of the final course grade this year.
  • 11% (429) - I do not have enough information about the 15% rule, EOC or STAAR testing to share an opinion now.
  • Survey Total - 4075
Demographic info:
75% (3060) - Parent
17% (689) - Teacher/Staff
6% (233) - Student
2% (79) - Administrator
0% (14) - Patron
On Tuesday, February 28, the Mansfield ISD school board voted to amend the grading guidelines so that the End-of-Course assessments are not calculated in the final course averages for this 2011-2012 school year.

Go to the STAAR/End of Course Information Blog Post for additional information about the new student assessment.

Energy Star Campuses Named

More Mansfield ISD campuses have been recognized with the ENERGY STAR award.

The ENERGY STAR® program has been a tremendous success since its establishment by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in 1992. The ENERGY STAR program has provided the tools and knowledge for superior energy management within organizations. Using energy more efficiently avoids emissions from power plants, avoids the need for additional power plants, and reduces energy bills.

The EPA recognizes buildings that have reduced energy consumption compared to both a baseline year and national averages. To be eligible buildings must be in the top 25 percent of similar existing buildings and comply with HVAC and Indoor Air Quality standards adopted by the EPA.

The following Mansfield ISD buildings are the most recent to have met the required guidelines and were recognized by at the February School Board meeting for receiving the ENERGY STAR award:
  • Alice Ponder Elementary School
  • Annette Perry Elementary School
  • Asa Low Intermediate School
  • Glenn Harmon Elementary School
  • James Coble Middle School
  • Louise Cabaniss Elementary School
