Australian Principal of the Year Tours Mansfield High School

Mansfield High School hosted the 2012 Australian Secondary Principal of the Year, Mrs. Shayne Player, on Wednesday, September 18. Mrs. Player is the Principal of the Tuggerah Lakes Secondary College, Tumbi Umbi Campus. While the school name may sound confusing, in Australia, the schools are called colleges. Mrs. Player’s campus is similar in student level to our middle schools.

As a prize for being named the Australian Secondary Principal of the Year, Mrs. Player was granted time for a trip around the world for a Professional Learning Sabbatical to visit schools in order to study common principles in high-performing schools. By the time she completes her trip, she will have visited schools in Finland, New York, Dallas, Los Angeles and many more.

She is particularly interested in seeing AVID schools that integrate technology. (Her campus is an AVID school, and they are exploring computers on a 1:1 basis with their students similar to our iPad program for high schools.) Since she was interested in seeing a school integrate technology with AVID, she toured a few Mansfield High School classes to see instructional integration of the iPads and learn of some of the experiences we have gained in implementing new technology.

While she was at our campus, she observed classes and spoke very highly of the kinds of things offered to our students. Before she left the school, she shared some thoughts on her visit to the campus and what she's learned on her trip to this and other countries.Watch her interview on YouTube:

4th Grader Wins @methodistmans Surgical Robot Naming Contest

A Mansfield ISD 4th grader gave the winning name for a surgical robot. “Ross” the robot has officially joined Methodist Mansfield Medical Center’s minimally invasive robotic surgery team.  R.O.S.S. stands for "Robotically Operated Surgical Specialist" and was named by Alice Ponder Elementary 4th grader, Emily Holland.

This ended up being a fun campaign and we hope it inspired the imaginations of the elementary students that submitted the entries. Over 1,000 name entries were submitted.
For providing the winning name, Emily and a few friends and family members took at tour of Methodist Mansfield including time using the surgical robot.

Elementary Robotics Teams Compete at State



Congratulations to the Mary Jo Sheppard Elementary Colts Robotics and Willie Brown Elementary Eagles Robotics teams that qualified for and competed at the Annual State Robotics Competition hosted by the Texas Computer Education Association (TCEA).

The goal of the TCEA Robotics Competition is to inspire young people to become science and technology leaders. Robotics is an invaluable resource for teaching science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) skills. It also develops critical thinking, collaboration, and problem solving, along with other 21st century skills such as creativity, imagination, curiosity, innovation, and self-confidence. The contest was held April 13, 2013, at Deer Park High School South in Deer Park, Texas. View a photo slideshow from the state contest.

Elementary students to name surgical robot

Methodist Mansfield Medical Center and Mansfield ISD Announce da Vinci Naming Contest

What would it be like to test drive a robot in a surgical operating room? Methodist Mansfield Medical Center and Mansfield ISD are partnering to give elementary students with an interest in robotics a chance to find out.

MISD elementary students will have an opportunity to name the da Vinci® robotic surgical system at Methodist Mansfield Medical Center as well as learn about its unique ability to assist surgeons to help patients recover more quickly. On Thursday, April 11 OR Director Shelley Cook discussed the da Vinci robotic surgical system used at the hospital with robotic team students at Willie Brown Elementary School:
“We are pleased to give kids an opportunity to experience real-world engineering through the da Vinci robot and work side by side with board certified surgeons to mentor children and help them learn about health and science in our community,” John Phillips, president of Methodist Mansfield Medical Center says. “We hope this fun contest inspires these ‘little surgeons’ to pursue careers in health, engineering, and business.”

Methodist Mansfield invites all MISD elementary school students to submit one name that describes the da Vinci robotic surgical system. The deadline is 4 p.m. on Thursday, May 2, 2013. The winning name will be announced during an upcoming school board meeting at the MISD Center for the Performing Arts.

The student who submits the winning name will receive a commemorative award certificate and an opportunity for the student and up to five friends to have an opportunity to operate with the da Vinci Surgical System and take a behind the scenes tour of the hospital. The winning class will also receive a healthy pizza party along with a special video of the da Vinci in action.

Impact Award: Career Tech Instructors Soar with Solar Power

When Jackie Bishop was researching home solar panels online last spring, he came across a project that would soon make Mansfield ISD history.

The Solar Car Challenge was founded to motivate students in science, engineering, technology and alternative energy – plus, it involves some pretty cool race cars!

After discovering the challenge, Bishop, an Auto Tech teacher at Ben Barber Career Tech Academy, quickly enlisted the help of Rob Goodson, an Engineering teacher on campus. The enthusiastic duo recruited a group of about twenty-five students to form “The Shine Runners,” MISD’s first ever solar car team.

Their mission was to design and construct a solar car to compete in the Solar Car Challenge, which is held at Texas Motor Speedway each summer. Since forming in 1993, the competition has grown from a high school extracurricular activity to a national event drawing over 65 schools from 20 states.

As construction on the car kicked off at the end of the school year, Bishop and Goodson enlisted the help of students from auto tech, engineering, media tech, graphic design, welding and construction; each of whom offered a level of expertise in their area.

In addition to uniting students from across the campus, the solar car project drew interest and support from several community businesses, including Mouser Electronics, The Power Store, ExelTech and Lockheed Martin. These sponsors contributed to the success of the project through donations of funds, equipment and even brain power.

A senior electrical engineer from ExelTech logged about 300 hours working closely with the students.

“It was a huge benefit to work with industry professionals,” said Bishop. “They learned about technology we wouldn’t typically learn in class. The experience they gained from this is something they will never forget.”

The team worked long hours throughout the summer, to ensure the car would be ready for its debut at Texas Motor Speedway.

The Shine Runners emerged victorious from their first race, with the 6th place title and the prestigious William Shih Award, presented to the solar car team with the highest level of technological achievement.

“It was probably the safest one out there,” said Goodson of the solar car. “It may not be the fastest, but it was most structurally sounds and had the best overall features. We are very proud of them for that.”

Following the success of their first race, the Shine Runners are already looking forward to their next challenge. They plan to take part in an eight-day cross-country race from Dallas to Los Angeles in July of 2013.

On behalf of the Mansfield ISD Administration, we wish the Shine Runnners the best of luck in their future challenges and we congratulate their fearless leaders, Jackie Bishop and Rob Goodson, for receiving our latest MISD Impact Award! They have truly earned their place in the sun.

JROTC CyberWarriors Secure Damaged Enterprise Computer


Five Mansfield High School JROTC cadets recently competed in the CyberPatriot V – National High School Cyber Defense Competition. Established by the Air Force Association (AFA), CyberPatriot is the nation's largest high school cyber security challenge. This unique competition was designed to give students a hands-on learning experience in cybersecurity and inspire students to consider science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields in their studies. It also offers support and technical expertise from industry leaders, including CyberPatriot's presenting sponsor the Northrop Grumman Foundation.


During Friday and Saturday, November 2 – 3, competitors were scored on how well they strengthened their assigned simulated computer systems by finding and fixing security issues.

This round of competition pitted over 120 schools from around the world in a grueling online game to teach students how to assess and correct vulnerabilities within a corporate Windows 7 network that had been damaged by users that changed critical processes and files. The six-hour event round was also the inaugural run of the new CyberPatriot Competition System (CCS), a new cyber training model.  For the first time teams could receive real-time feedback of their scores along with a report of the scored problems they correctly solved.

Mansfield High School's JROTC team, known as CyberWarrior pictured above during the competition, consisted of student cadets Jonathon Chen, Tristan Crawley, Chris Meek, Anthony White, and Dakota Kuhn. The cadets were not told what type of computer, which operating system would be tested, which repairs are required, or how to go about making corrections until they installed the image from their secret archive that was delivered just in time to start the game.

“The first challenges the team faced were testing the authenticity of the downloaded ISO image by MD5 files checksums and the secret decompression passwords,” said SFC Darrell Watkins, their team coach and Army JROTC Instructor at Mansfield High School JROTC. “For a few minutes, I could see the stress level building as the team worked feverishly to install the VMWare Virtual Machine on their Windows game platform. The team came together and assigned tasks, recorded every error, added and deleted authorized users from their scenario, and developed a trouble ticket methodology to establish their priorities, enjoying their snacks and an occasional joke along their way to securing and protecting the system.”


Effective communication within the CyberPatriot Team on computer vulnerabilities, with their coach for questions of the 400-page rule book, and external communications with CyberPatriot Operations Center (CPOC) that was in the path of Hurricane Sandy last week, would all prove instrumental to their success in this game session.

The goal of this program is to teach young people about myriad security issues that render everything from cell phones to automobile ignition systems very lucrative targets for computer crackers and hackers. SFC Watkins said, “CyberPatriot conducts actual online hacking, since that is exactly what we are learning to prevent with this cyber security program. As the team made security repairs, the game counter noted their progress and assigned them points for each security flaw repaired correctly. With the introduction of over 10,000 iPads devices within Mansfield ISD high schools this school year, we have seen firsthand during the past several weeks the benefits of monitoring what users are doing on computers and correcting vulnerabilities.”

Many users ask their seemingly knowledgeable friends to make system, registry, and network changes that could expose the entire network to damage from others in the interconnected digital world, causing problems that could require hundreds, if not thousands of hours for an organization's IT staff to repair. Mansfield ISD’s network staff deployed many virtual Windows Office platforms in a very short time to our students for use on their Apple devices. This gives students access to applications that many families could not afford in the retail sector. The benefit of the virtual machine on a computer is that if it malfunctions, it can quickly be replaced with the image taken before anything was done to cause it damage.

The team wishes to thank AT&T, Northrup-Grumman, the Air Force Association, and the entire CyberPatriot family for helping each of them to learn to maintain and repair security related computer infrastructure by employing the digital game realm as a learning vehicle.

iPad Parent Night Oct 29 at The Center

Your high school student has a district-issued iPad. 
Now what?!

Parents of MISD high school students are invited to attend this learning opportunity for next steps for high school parents in the iPad initiative.

The Mansfield ISD technology development team will host an iPad Parent Night on October 29, 2012, from 6:00-7:30 p.m. at the Mansfield ISD Center for the Performing Arts.

This free event will feature tips for parents about managing your student’s iPad use at home as well as some exploration of outstanding apps for education in a hands-on format.

The Center is located at 1110 W Debbie Lane, Mansfield, Texas 76063 (Map).

Frontier Students Display Digital Skills at State Convention

Four Frontier High School students participated in a display of digital learning prowess at last month's TASA/TASB Convention. The Texas Association of School Administrators (TASA) and the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) partner each year to bring Texas school board members and school administrators a premier education-related convention. This year's convention was held September 28-30 in Austin. Among the convention speakers and exhibits was a Digital Learning Pavilion (DLP).

Secondary students from across the state were invited to the convention's DLP to display their ingenuity and collaboration skills in a project-based learning environment. Using technology and social media to accelerate their problem-solving skills, students teamed up to create innovative solutions to real-world problems.

The Frontier High School students at the TASA/TASB Convention DLP were provided questions and then they were to use technology to answer and create a presentation. This was not a competition, rather a display of students' technological learning skills in action.

Students completed two different tasks, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. The kids were given a SMART board, two iPads, a Macbook, and a Dell laptop and that was it. The morning question was, Childhood obesity rates are climbing. Is our appetite for sugar killing us? and the afternoon question was, Electronic resources drive learning, even textbooks are available online. How does this change affect you?

According to their teacher, Elise Buchhorn from Ben Barber Career Tech Academy/Frontier High School, the students conducted all of the project work and then gave a presentation of their response at the end of the session.

"They researched and gathered data online and used web tools for their first presentation," said Buchhorn. "Their afternoon session, they wanted to survey some of their classmates, so they Skyped them and then screen recorded their conversations and made video clips to insert into their Keynote software presentation. It was very impressive on what they did and how they did it."

Buchhorn made the following video to highlight their day mostly for the parents to see their kids in action, but really, it's too cool and worth sharing.

Summit HS was the final campus in the high school iPad program deployment. Students and the professional staff at all MISD high schools were issued iPad devices. Over 9,000 iPad 2 devices were issued at high schools. Make-up dates for deployment and an upcoming Parent informational meeting date are pending. Stay current on the high school iPad program.


Dr. Fred Garza's "Reflections" Scientific, Technological, and Literary Observations in Pastel, art exhibit opened on Wednesday, September 26, in the Mansfield HS Library Learning Commons. This exhibit is divided into three distinct parts. Each part of the exhibit is influenced by areas of which Dr. Garza is very passionate. The exhibit will be available Monday - Friday, 7:00 a.m. -3:30 p.m., until Thursday, November 15, 2012.


Each month during the school year, students from our elementary schools are selected to receive the Superintendent’s Star Award for outstanding citizenship. The photo above is from the September 2012 School Board Meeting photo gallery.


Timberview HS Basketball Coach, Duane Gregory, took some of his basketball players to Thelma Jones Elementary for the elementary school's Camp Out Reading Day on Thursday, September 27. "I’m not sure who enjoyed it more, the elementary students or my guys," said coach Gregory.

Mr. Bill O'Neal (above at left), the State Historian of Texas, spoke at two assemblies at Lillard Intermediate on Friday, September 21 for Celebrate Freedom Week. He shared artifacts from early America and spoke with the students about the importance of our Constitution. Mr. O'Neal is the father of Lynn Martinez (pictured at right), a teacher at Lillard.


Glenn Harmon Elementary Students received a grant from the MISD Education Foundation in 2012, to provide seven opportunities for service during the 2012-2013 school year, to the Green Oaks Assisted Living Center. The dream of the Campus is to have each grade level prepare and send students to the Assisted Living Center for a 45 minute visit, which would include a small gift made by students and the residents together, and either a musical, audiovisual or dramatic performance. Mouser Electronics hosted students from Ben Barber Career Tech Acedmy as part of their recent community partnership celebration for Mouser employees and special guests. Mouser sponsored a couple of student programs at BBCTA last year, the Robotics teams and the Solar Car team. Dr. Bob Morrison (pictured above), Superintendent, took a test-drive of the BBCTA solar car around the Mouser parking lot. The solar car and team, called the "Shine Runners," competed over the summer in the Solar Car Challenge at Texas Motor Speedway. The student-constructed solar car won the William Shih Award for the highest level of technical achievement at the summer competition.

The student robotics teams at BBCTA were also available for technical demonstrations at the Mouser event. The teams, the Vinegar Vikings, Crusading Cucumbers, and Fighting Pickles (pictured below), each brought robots to feature and thank Mouser employees for their continued support.

Board Approves High School 1:1 iPad Initiative

A message from Dr. Vaszauskas, MISD Associate Superintendent for Curriculum, Instruction, and Accountability:

At [the May 22] Board meeting our Board of Trustees approved the purchase of iPads for all high school professional staff and students. We are working on a plan to get these devices to teachers and other professional staff members as soon as we can, but we do not know how quickly the order can be processed and shipped. The plan to distribute the iPads to the high school students once school starts in the fall is being developed but is not finalized. Once we have more information, we will get that out to you.

We plan to offer optional opportunities this summer for staff members to come and get their iPads, and staff will receive SDCE credit for their time. However, those dates depend on the shipping schedule from Apple. Check the website often for more information.

We are working on a professional development schedule to ensure that everyone has plenty of training opportunities throughout the 2012-2013 school year and beyond. For teachers who already feel very comfortable with the iPads, you will be able to integrate the iPad into your classroom at your own pace. Some staff members, like me, will need a little more time to develop iPad skills. Therefore, all teachers will continue to have access to physical textbooks and resources that you typically use in your classroom.

Proposed Mansfield ISD high school iPad initiative Q&A

Updated Wednesday, May 23: At the May 22 Regular Board meeting, the MISD School Board approved the recommendation as made by the Superintendent for awarding the quote to procure devices, equipment, and services needed to initiate an Apple iPad2 1:1 program at all MISD high schools.

We have proposed starting a 1:1 program that would place over 10,600 iPad2 devices in high school for students and teachers this fall. The Mansfield ISD School Board is considering this proposal and will likely vote on the proposal at the Tuesday, May 22 Regular Meeting.

Presentations about the iPad proposal were made at the March and April School Board meetings along with during the Called Meeting on Tuesday, May 15. 

We want to continue to build on our commitment to provide innovative educational opportunities and we believe this 1 to 1 program is another way we can help increase student engagement.

The School Board has asked that their questions along with the administrative answers be provided here on the District blog so that the community can view the main issues and thoughts on the initiative.

1. If kids forget their iPad or it’s dead, what will you do?
If kids forget theirs, we will have classroom sets of textbooks that the students will be able to use. Teachers can also be innovative and allow students to share an iPad with another student. If it is dead, we will have charging cords.

2. Will there be enough bandwidth?
The number of access points that will be installed as part of the bond this summer meets the specifications outlined in the Apple deployment guide. That work will be completed by July 26, 2012. To prepare for the Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) implementation that had been planned previously, increases to bandwidth are planned that will more than double the district’s capacity. These bandwidth upgrades are also scheduled for completion during the month of July.

3. Have we thought about doing this at middle schools?
We discussed having it at middle schools, but we think that if we allow them to use this technology as 8th graders and then do not have it for them as 9th graders, it would be detrimental. We feel it is better to start at the top and work our way down the grade levels.

1. Number of textbooks currently available or that will be available in the fall.
McGraw Hill has committed to a minimum of at least five textbooks by the beginning of the school year. Other publishers are developing textbooks for release, too; they have not announced the quantity of titles and subjects of books that they plan to release for August.

2. Have we considered starting with the upper grade levels only?
There are not age-specific classes at the high school. Depending on the class, freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors could be in the same section.

3. One other question, if we decided to pursue the iPads, would we continue investigating the BYOD policy?
Yes. Whether devices belong to MISD or to students, implementation of a BYOD policy is recommended. The iPad 1:1 proposal is targeted at the high schools, so many of the advantages to having a BYOD policy would involve grades K-8. Providing the teachers and kids with some guidelines for bringing those devices to school and using them appropriately would be a good update to the handbook.

4. When you say 5 textbooks, does that mean 5 per grade level and what content?
McGraw Hill expects to release five books this fall at the high school level. McGraw Hill and other publishers have not released information about specific content areas in order to maintain an advantage against their competitors. These titles are available now:

5. Most of the publishers today have digital versions of their textbooks, but it is my understanding these are not interactive, basically just an online version of the textbook. The new electronic books that are being developed in conjunction with Apple are interactive books. Is this correct? Will the current digital textbooks that are not interactive work on the iPads? And, will the new interactive electronic textbooks work only on the iPad?
The electronic versions of textbooks being developed in conjunction with Apple feature interactive elements such as those demonstrated during the February board meeting. Online versions are available for a number of texts that are currently adopted. Books that are written using Adobe Flash, a multimedia platform used on some websites for animation, are not compatible with iPads. The new iBooks are compatible only with the iPad.

If the board moves forward with this project, the district will develop a virtual lab with up to 600 virtual PCs that high school students can access using the same VMWare app that is installed on board members’ iPads. Any materials that use Flash can be accessed in this way over the Internet. Licensing for VMWare is based on the number of users who access it simultaneously, which is why a lab with 600 seats is projected to meet students’ needs.

1. Can Frontier HS students run the specialized software used in FHS programs on iPads? (This question was asked at the board meeting.)
The laptops at FHS were not configured to run the high end applications in use there. The cost of increasing system resources on the MacBooks to do this was prohibitive. There are computer labs at FHS where students use high-end software such as AutoCAD, AutoDesk Inventor, and Multisim. The district is in the process of exploring creation of a virtual lab that students could access using their iPads, which would add all of the function of a high-end desktop computer to those devices.

2. Will kids be able to access Fast ForWord on iPads?
Technically, the iPad can be used to access Fast ForWord. At this stage, we’re not ready to incorporate the iPad with Fast ForWord instruction.

3. If we allow kids to bring their own ipad3 will they be able to download any of our purchased apps that we put on our ipad2s?
Yes. The redemption code for the app works with a student’s personal iTunes account.

4. Haven't we piloted the use of ipads at one of our schools? If so, which was it?
A 1:1 pilot utilizing the iPad2 began at Summit High School on Monday, April 16, 2012.

5. Is there any way to utilize these devices to combat summer drain in the low income areas of our district?
We have not discussed that at this point. Due to the requirements of accelerated instruction for STAAR EOC testing, summer school will have to look dramatically different in the very near future.

6. How do we incorporate our textbook committee into the use of the textbook software?
As part of the current textbook adoption process, a committee reviews materials and makes a recommendation for adoption. There is no textbook adoption scheduled for this year. If the district moves forward with this project, the textbook committee will play a role similar to this.

7. How long will the iPad2 be available for purchase?
Apple has not made an announcement about how long the iPad2 will remain available for purchase.

8. Do we need to purchase additional devices for our anticipated growth and replacement of damaged devices? If so how many?
The proposal includes 120 iPad2 devices (100 for students and 20 for teachers) that will remain in the district to replace iPad2s that are damaged and sent away for repair. This quantity is based on Apple’s recommendations given our growth rate and the need for replacements. Growth in the high schools is protected to be .9% in 2012-2013.

9. What is the cost of AppleCare?
The standard cost of AppleCare Plus is $99 per device. By purchasing 10 packs of iPad2s, the cost is reduced to $79 per device. This cost is included in the proposal. Fees for repairs and related expenses include $50 per student, $25 for students who qualify for reduced lunches, and $10 for students who qualify for free lunches.

1. Are we going order the same amount of books for the 2012-2013 school year? If the answer is in the affirmative, does that mean we’ll actually add to our text book expenditures (iPads + Textbooks = Additional Funds).
Expenditures on paper textbooks will be reduced by $600,000, which will be redirected to make this purchase.

2. Have we formulated in "Laymen's" language the advantages of purchasing the iPads for 2012-2013 vs. delaying the purchases until the next biennium?
New textbook adoptions will continue. Within 1-2 years, it will be time to begin replacing computers at the high schools. By changing course now, the district can invest in more engaging resources that can be kept up to date more easily while providing students with much greater access to technology than traditional labs.

The use of iPads in MISD schools may contribute to increased enrollment.

1. Have we seen any studies which compare the test scores of students using a textbook in digital and traditional book formats?
Yes, Abilene Christian University has conducted a series of studies about the impact of iPad use on student achievement. Summaries of these studies are listed on their website. I’ve copied one of the passages from the ACU site below:

Several newly released studies show students used the iPad more frequently and with better results when compared to paper-only text. One comparison study by Dr. Ian Shepherd and Dr. Brent Reeves in an undergraduate micro-economics class demonstrates increased engagement and frequency of access compared to a student using a laptop to access BlackBoard, a course management platform. Another study led by Dr. Bob McKelvain examined student annotation practices and found favorable results by students using iPad to annotate. Ryan Gertner, an ACU graduate student, compared use of iPad in demonstrations of higher order learning and showed iPad provided a higher rate of transfer learning in comparison samples in an undergraduate Psychology course.

2. How will the applications of updates be handled for each unit?
Updates to the devices are handled using a Mobile Device Management (MDM) server. Through an MDM server, students receive a link that they use to update their devices over wireless. If updates are not completed, an MDM server can be set up to send a notification to the district so that the student can be prompted to complete the process or guided through it if needed. To manage the 500 mobile devices that the district currently owns, Technology Development has already submitted an MDM solution in its additional requests for infrastructure improvements for the 2012-2013 school year.

3. Have we looked at the Kindle, which is smaller and fits in hand, cheaper, runs flash, weighs less and loads websites faster?
Yes. Unfortunately, Amazon does not accept purchase orders. A credit card has to be registered with each device in order to pay for content.

4. Will the district create accounts for each user to download the textbooks and updates?
Textbooks are loaded onto iPads using a Mobile Device Management (MDM) system in conjunction with students’ iTunes accounts. When the purchase of an app or iBook is required, the district purchases a code for each student through the Apple Volume Purchase Program (VPP). These codes are distributed to the students using an MDM, and the students then download the iBooks or apps using their iTunes accounts.

5. Also, what is the license fee associated with these textbooks? Is this a one-time fee or must this be renewed each year?
The license structure for different products varies. The district already owns some apps, electronic books, and other resources for many subjects through earlier textbook adoptions. The most that a district can pay for an iBook is $14.99. Some e-books may cost less than $5, and we may have the ability to download only certain chapters of the book. The codes for iBooks and apps can be used once and are considered consumable.

6. Do we currently have the record keystrokes (specifically how a computer/laptop is used)? If so, do we have percentage of appropriate use vs off task use of the laptops during a traditional school day?

Filtering software collects information about the sites that students access. Whether a use is off-task or appropriate depends on the time of day, the student’s schedule, and the teacher’s instructions. If a student attempts to access an inappropriate site, a notification is generated and the filtering software blocks the viewing of that site.

7. What issues have we encountered with the issuance of laptops at Frontier High School? Is the filter working?
At Frontier High School, the primary challenges we’ve encountered include accidental damage by students and the workload involved in processing insurance claims. The original version of AppleCare does not cover accidental damage. Under AppleCare Plus, two instances of accidental damage are covered with a $49 deductible per instance.

The filter functions at school and on mobile devices (iPads, laptops, etc.) when they are away from school. New methods for evading the filter are developed and new URLs for inappropriate sites are added to the Internet daily, as are countermeasures designed to address them.

8. Can the our network infrastructure handle 3-1 personal technology when students have a laptop / tablet / Nook or Kindle / phone / iPod / game device / etc?
The district’s wireless capacity at the high schools is designed to handle 35-40 devices in each classroom. The wireless network is divided into two segments (E-Staff and E-Student) for instructional/administrative purposes and another one (Guest) for personal devices. As part of the wireless upgrades planned this summer, a system will be installed that can be used to ensure that iPads and other district-issued devices can access the E-Staff and E-Student networks. The bulk of the district’s bandwidth will be allocated to the E-Staff and E-Student networks. Other devices at the high schools will be relegated to the Guest/BYOD network, the bandwidth for which will be “throttled back” in order to provide more bandwidth for E-Staff and E-Student. This is a solution that has worked well in other districts.

9. If approved, will faculty have the opportunity to pick up an iPad prior to the end of school or during a designated window during the summer?
We’ve been exploring what would be involved in making the iPads available to teachers over the summer. The earliest date that the board may consider approval of the project is May 22. Orders will be placed as soon as possible after that date. I do not project that the orders will have been received prior to the end of school. I’ve asked for an estimate from Apple about how long it will take to get the 500 teacher iPads ready for distribution over the summer.

The district has a variety of devices and media for different purposes. For use in a 1:1 pilot, observations in other districts and our own testing indicate that the iPad2 is the most versatile of these tools. Apple also has the greatest number of educational apps available (over 20,000) and a model for deploying this content that is feasible for an enterprise of the district's size.

10. Why sole source platform?
The new interactive media developed by Apple and the major textbook publishers runs natively on the iPad2. The EPUB and .pdf versions of texts provided through many of the district's current adoptions also work on that device.

11. How easy to transition platforms / content or are you locked in?
To prevent the district from being locked into a given platform, solutions have been developed so that media in many formats can be accessed. Resources available in Flash can be accessed through a free app coupled with a virtual desktop. The district's Virtual Desktop Infrastructure, which is scheduled for expansion this summer, also provides access to Windows 7, Internet Explorer, and the Microsoft Office Suite.

If this initiative moves forward, we’re committed to continuing to monitor the marketplace to make sure that our students and teachers get the best return on technology investments.

1. Has a comparison been made of an iPad versus Windows based tablet been performed and what was the result of that?
The textbook publishers have produced iBooks with interactive media for iPads. The proposed iPad project includes Windows functionality using VMWare virtual desktops. Having this virtual lab available means that students will also be able to access sites and materials available through the district’s current adoptions.

2. Do updates to the textbooks that will be loaded onto the tablets have a cost? Per update? Annually?
Updates to textbooks do not have an associated cost. New versions of textbooks will need to be acquired as they are adopted. The cost for the interactive iBooks available through the AppStore is capped at $14.99. Many electronic resources are available at no cost through the district’s current adoptions.

3. How do you download external documents onto the iPad?
Documents can be accessed on the iPad using iCloud, email, and/or apps such as GoodReader.

4. How does our installed base of computers work with the iPad?
Files can be passed to and from iPads to PCs using tools such as email and cloud-based storage.

5. What do we do when a unit doesn’t work, during school, after school?
When a unit does not work, the student or teacher turns it in for service and checks out a spare iPad2. The cost for spares is included in the proposal. Problems that occur after hours can be addressed the following day at school.

6. What about batteries? How do we charge the device while the students are at school?
Students will charge their devices at home in the same way that they charge their cell phones. There are also outlets in the classrooms that students may use.

7. How are we going to handle integration of curriculum when our teachers start to write it?
Teachers have written the curriculum. The district will follow the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills.

8. As an early adopter, do we have projections of what revenue we may see from exporting our books?
No revenue is projected from textbook sales due to the quantity of free materials available to districts online and through their existing adoptions.

9. Please verify that we will still have textbooks initially, and for what estimated period of time?
As new adoptions come up, electronic textbooks will be adopted. Existing textbook adoptions will continue to be used. Many of these existing textbook adoptions have electronic materials that students can use at no additional cost.

10. Why wouldn’t all textbooks be available for the iPad?
Major publishers are developing new titles in the new interactive iBook format. Many of the textbooks that are currently adopted by the district have electronic resources that are accessible using the iPad.

11. How will this implementation affect our ESL students?
ELL learners have been using iPod Touch devices for nearly three years in Mansfield ISD. Because the iPad uses the same operating system, apps used with iPod Touch devices can be used with iPads, too. The following list includes some of the apps that have been used by ELL students in MISD:

Leadership Mansfield Boards ActivBus

Tuesday, February 21, was “Education Day” for the members of Leadership Mansfield. The group toured several Mansfield ISD facilities and even had the opportunity to hop on board the Promethean ActivBus as it was stationed at BBCTA.

The 36’ long custom RV travels across the country to visit school districts and allow participants to take a “test-drive” of some of their interactive technologies, many of which are available in District classrooms. 

The ActivBus features a model ActivClassroom with  Promethean boards, document cameras, learner response systems and the newest Promethean product, the ActivTable. The ActivTable is a large touch-driven table featuring dozens of educational applications (similar to a massive iPad).

  • Every K-4 classroom in MISD has an ActivBoard installed

Asa Low Intermediate - International Space Station Q&A Video

Students at Mansfield ISD's Asa Low Intermediate School had the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to talk live with NASA astronauts aboard the International Space Station on Tuesday, January 31. The students took part in a NASA in-flight education downlink with the Expedition 30 crew aboard the International Space Station as it orbits Earth at an altitude ranging from 230-286 miles and a speed of approximately 17,500 miles per hour.

To prepare for the downlink, students took part in over 100 space-related lessons and curriculum projects, including a school community Space Night event on January 27. Attractions at Space Night will included genuine moon rocks and a NASA space suit.

In honor of the event, the Mansfield ISD School Board adopted a resolution to ceremonially renamed the campus NASA Low Intermediate School for month of January, 2012.

Asa Low Intermediate teacher, Patricia Londono, worked over two years on the submission with NASA's Teaching from Space team. On July 1, 2011, NASA awarded Asa Low Intermediate School with an In-Flight Education Downlink that was held on January 31, 2012.

Mansfield ISD Robotics Teams Win Big at Qualifier

Mansfield ISD Robotics, home of The Fighting Pickles, Crusading Cucumbers, and Vinegar Vikings, along with UT Arlington hosted a FIRST FTC Robotics Qualifier tournament last Saturday, February 11, 2012. The event was a great success! Everything went close to plan and we had a great crowd, including the Mansfield Mayor Pro Tem, Larry Broseh, his wife and grand-daughter. Every one of all ages thought it was very exciting and fun.

Our three robotics teams all performed beautifully and conducted themselves in a way that all of MISD can be proud of! Unlike many robotics organizations, our group is a completely extra-curricular activity. We have a great student leadership team in place and our teams are student run from designing the robot to planning community event.

Each of our teams won a judged award (and got the trophy to go with it) and they all qualified for the next level of competition, The SouthWest Regional Contest, which will be hosted at UT Arlington on Saturday, March 3, 2012.

Here are the specific judged awards the teams won:

#127 Fighting Pickles - PTC Design Award
Basic Criteria: Robot incorporates industrial design elements in their robot solution which is aesthetic and functional and reflected in the submitted engineering notebook

#3768 Crusading Cucumbers - Connect Award
Basic Criteria: The team is the most connected to the local and engineering community through outreach and giving back
#5393 Vinegar Vikings - Motivate Award
Basic Criteria: The team shows great team spirit and enthusiasm throughout the competition and functions well as a team

The Vinegar Vikings, our newest team, was in 3rd place after the qualifying matches and captained an alliance in the semifinals. The Crusading Cucumbers was chosen as an alliance partner and went on to win the competition (and get the even bigger trophy associated with that).

The three sponsors, Susan Sevier, Robert Goodson, and Kashieka Popkin, all Ben Barber CTA teachers, are very proud to be part of this with these great kids!

The teams are working hard to prepare for the next level of competition. Come check us out Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 3:15 – 5:15 PM at the Ben Barber campus.

Intermediate School Renamed for NASA Event

For the month of January, 2012, Asa Low Intermediate School will be renamed NASA Low Intermediate School in preparation for a remarkable educational opportunity. The ceremonial renaming resolution was approved at the Mansfield ISD December School Board meeting.

Education Downlink
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) conducts educational opportunities called In-Flight Education Downlinks. In-Flight Education Downlinks allow educators and students to interact with crewmembers aboard the International Space Station (ISS).

Asa Low Intermediate teacher, Patricia Londono (pictured at right), worked over two years on the submission with NASA's Teaching from Space team. On July 1, 2011, NASA awarded Asa Low Intermediate School with an In-Flight Education Downlink to be held on Tuesday, January 31, 2012.

In honor of this unique opportunity (and because the school name, Asa Low, was one letter away from the space agency's name) Mansfield ISD administrators chose to ceremonially rename the campus NASA Low Intermediate School for the month of January 2012 with the school board's adoption of a resolution in December. (We're even going so far as to add a big letter 'N' next to the school name on the outside of the building.)

NASA Low Intermediate will conduct over 100 space-related lessons and projects, webcasts, and a Space Night event in January 2012.

Website Service Interruption

The Mansfield ISD website (www.mansfieldisd.org) will be down for maintenance today (Tuesday, October 4) beginning at 4:30 PM. The Technology Department will be working to restore access to the site as quickly as possible. Mansfield ISD online services like Web Mail and Infinite Campus will not be affected by the outage, but you will need to access them via a direct link. CyberSafety Awareness Week

During the week of May 16–20, Mansfield ISD Technology will be hosting the first MISD CyberSafety Awareness Week to provide a focus for students, teachers, parents and community about online safety and our students. Topics include safe surfing, cyberbullying, messaging, and how to protect personal information when online.

 
K-4 students will focus on age appropriate topics during their Technology Applications rotation:
Grades K-2
  • Ways we use the Internet
  • Basic rules for online safety
Grades 3-4
  • Cyberbullying (what it is and what you can do about it)
  • Safe Surfing (ways to protect yourself online.
5th – 8th grade students will be participate in related learning activities during their advisory period.
Grades 5-6
  • Text Messaging (safety, etiquette)
  • Keeping personal information safe when online
Grades 7-8
  • Smart Surfing (research tools, copyright, viruses/spyware)
  • How to handle Cyberbullying, protecting yourself and your information online
Parents, teachers, administrators and community members are invited to attend an event on Thursday, May 19, in the MISD Administration Building Great Room at 605 East Broad Street from 6:30 – 8:00 PM.

A panel of guest speakers will be presenting information with time at the end for questions from the audience.

Topics include:
  • UT Arlington Admissions – Social Networking and College Admissions
  • MISD Human Resources – Social Networking and Future Employment
