Kiwanis-sponsored student clubs help Meals on Wheels

Last fall, the Asa Low Jr. Intermediate School Builders Club discussed community projects they wanted to support during the holiday season. The club agreed to help organize the annual Kiwanis of Mansfield/Afternoon holiday baskets for Meals on Wheels (MOW) recipients in Mansfield. Meals on Wheels of Tarrant County “promotes the dignity and independence of older adults, persons with disabilities, and other homebound persons by delivering nutritious meals.”

Calling on ideas they found on the MOW website, the members decided first on a fundraiser. All Asa Low students were invited to make a cash donation that would be used to purchase useful gifts. Over $230 was donated by students; the club purchased lighted magnifying glasses and long-handled grabbers for the MOW clients in Mansfield. Students that made a donation decorated paper cars, which are displayed on a club created paper road near the Asa Low Builders Club meeting room. Next, the club solicited help from several other Kiwanis-sponsored clubs in Mansfield. The Timberview High School Key Club members made fleece scarves that would be attached to the grabbers. The Erma Nash Elementary K-Kids and the Legacy Key Club members made Holiday cards. When it was time to put everything together, the Mansfield High School Key Club members joined the Asa Low Builders Club at a meeting to help out. Finally, Kiwanis of Mansfield Afternoon members assisted at the Wesley Mission Center in distributing the gifts to the local Meals on Wheels drivers.

A card from Meals on Wheels offered thanks from the Mansfield clients who received these gifts: “Thanks to each and every one of you who made it possible for our Meals on Wheels clients in Mansfield to receive such lovely gifts this holiday season.”

This project truly exemplified the Kiwanis Builders Club vision to develop competent, capable, caring leaders through the vehicle of service.

Senior Art Shows at The Center

The MISD Fine Arts Department established a new visual arts show opportunity for advanced art students last year. Senior Art Shows for our Advanced Visual Art Students are scheduled at the MISD Center for the Performing Arts.

These shows give senior art students an opportunity to have a larger art show in addition to the District's Annual Art shows held in the spring.

The Senior Art shows typically run one to two weeks in duration and feature artwork from two to four students.

Fine Arts Senior Art Shows update: 

Mansfield golfer heads to Pebble Beach Tourney

Nicholas Narcisse, a junior at Mansfield High School, is among four local teens to compete in the 2013 Nature Valley First Tee Open at Pebble Beach, an official Champions Tour event September 27-29, and televised internationally on Golf Channel. The teens are being sent by First Tee of Fort Worth.

Each participant will be teamed a Champions Tour player and an amateur on Pebble Beach Golf Links and Del Monte Golf Course on Friday and Saturday. The final round will be played on Pebble Beach on Sunday, where the Champions Tour winner will be crowned and the top 23 pro-junior teams will compete for their own championship. Narcisse was also selected to participate in the Coca Cola Champions Challenge on Thursday, September 26 where he was be paired with a Champions Tour Pro and competed for a chance at a $40,000 purse for The First Tee of Fort Worth.

Narcisse got his first tournament win in 2012 at the Pro Duffers Charity Golf Tournament but has four second place finishes and one third place finish. Narcisse currently plays with a 0.8 handicap as he works on continually improving his game. Narcisse is a member of the Junior Advisory Board and has attended The First Tee National Life Skills and Leadership Academy, and the National Advanced Academy. Narcisse is an active volunteer in his church and also had the privilege of playing in a foursome with golf great Lee Trevino a couple of years ago.

Timberview seniors selected for 2014 Army All-American Bowl

Congratulations to seniors Ed Paris and Brandon Simmons, Timberview High School varsity football defensive backs, for being selected for the 2014 U.S. Army All-American Bowl. This prestigious bowl game takes place at the San Antonio Alamodome on January 4 and will be televised on NBC. Only 90 players from across the U.S. are selected each year.

On Thursday, September 26, Paris and Simmons received their jerseys during a special afternoon ceremony at the campus.

Grads Make Radio Gold and Take National Title

Sammy Gonzalez, Ryan Tuomey (Media Tech Teacher at BBCTA), and Gabriel Kunda show off championship medals

Congratulations to Sammy Gonzalez and Gabriel Kunda for winning gold in the Audio/Radio category at the 2013 SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference. The conference was held June 24-28 in Kansas City, MO. The 49th annual SkillsUSA NLSC is a showcase of career and technical education students.

Representing Ben Barber Career Tech Academy's media tech program, Sammy and Gabriel competed and won gold in the Audio/Radio. Listen to their winning entry. Kunda and Gonzalez are both recent Summit High School graduates.

"I couldn't be more proud of my guys," said Ryan Tuomey, media tech teacher at Ben Barber. "I didn't think I would get emotional, but seeing their face and how happy they were when their name was called, reinforced why I became a teacher. They have worked so hard, stayed focused, and their dedication is what brought them success. I took a line from Friday Night Lights, 'Clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose' and that became our motto throughout the competition. These are two great young men and I am honored to be their mentor. They will go on to do great things one day."

Gabriel Kunda will attend Dallas Baptist University and plans to major in music and minor in communications. Sammy Gonzalez plans to attend the MediaTech Institute in Dallas for a year, and then on to Full Sail University in Florida.

2nd Grader Throws First Pitch at Rangers Game

Walker Shaw, 2nd grader at Nancy Neal Elementary, received the opportunity to throw out the ceremonial first pitch at the Texas Rangers game on Tuesday, June 11, 2013. The Mansfield ISD Education Foundation held a fundraising auction recently to win the first pitch opportunity. Even though the Rangers ended up losing the game against the Indians, Shaw was all smiles after this winning pitch to start his summer. Way to go, Walker!

4th Grader Wins @methodistmans Surgical Robot Naming Contest

A Mansfield ISD 4th grader gave the winning name for a surgical robot. “Ross” the robot has officially joined Methodist Mansfield Medical Center’s minimally invasive robotic surgery team.  R.O.S.S. stands for "Robotically Operated Surgical Specialist" and was named by Alice Ponder Elementary 4th grader, Emily Holland.

This ended up being a fun campaign and we hope it inspired the imaginations of the elementary students that submitted the entries. Over 1,000 name entries were submitted.

For providing the winning name, Emily and a few friends and family members took at tour of Methodist Mansfield including time using the surgical robot.

Battle of the Books District Champion Teams

Congratulations to the Mansfield ISD Battle of the Books Champion Teams representing middle, intermediate, and elementary schools. Battle of the Books is a school-wide competition where teams vie for the title of Best Readers on their campus held each Spring. Each team reads 10 pre-selected books and answers questions in a Whiz Quiz style round; the team with the most correct answers at the end of the round wins. The winners of first round battle on until only one team is standing. The final team competes against the best readers at their grade level in Mansfield ISD. The competition is intense, and preparation takes months.

This year’s teams have made an incredible effort, reading and practicing under the watchful eyes of their coaches. Congratulations to this year’s winning teams:

The Donna Shepard Intermediate School’s Battle of the Books team pictured above: (From left to right) Priscilla Brothers, Noah Liukonen, Carter Ho (team captain), Nicholas Winston, Khalid Ahmed, and Leah Nguyen. Each student was required to try out for each school’s team. The students were expected to read and become experts on books from the selected list of ten titles. The detailed questions were asked of all 6 teams at the district battle. The team representing Donna Shepard Intermediate earned the most points, thus winning the district trophy. Each of these Shepard students received a gold medal for his/her hard work.

Elementary School: Roberta Tipps Elementary

MISD held the elementary level district competition for Battle of the Books on Friday, May 3rd. The purpose is simply to encourage students to read good books and have fun while competing with peers. A typical "Battle" is a full day tournament in which students' teams earn points by answering questions about the books on the book list. They play two rounds and at the end of the morning, points are totaled and teams with the top three scores are awarded 1st, 2nd and 3rd place medals. In addition the 1st place team wins the district trophy for their school. This year, Tipps Elementary won 1st place. Team members are pictured above (L-R) Ella Scoresby, Ainsley Jones, Julia Lederman, Brenna Franklin, and Sarah des Bordes with Teachers (L-R) Tina Owens and Heather Hughes. After three tie-breaker rounds to determine 2nd and 3rd place winners, Spencer and Daulton Elementary schools tied for 2nd place. Ponder Elementary made it to the tie-breaker round and came in 4th. Congratulations to all the participating teams.

High School Seniors Make Finals at DECA Internationals

Congratulations to Frontier High School senior, Melany Gonzalez and her partner, Timberview High School senior, Andrew Bostic, for making the finals in Financial Analysis Team Decision Making, at the DECA International Career Development Conference. The conference was held in Anaheim CA, April 24-27, with over 15,000 student competitors from all over the world.

Their event included a rigorous financial exam as well as role-plays in front of judges from the finance industry . The team came in 1st place in Texas where they went on to represent  Ben Barber DECA, Frontier High School, Timberview High School, Mansfield ISD, and Texas. If you see Melany or Andrew, please congratulate them on a job well done.

The DECA International Career Development Conference (ICDC) is the highlight of the DECA year. Fourteen thousand high school students, advisors, businesspersons and alumni gather for several days of DECA excitement. Most participants at ICDC compete in one of DECA's competitive events. The top competitors in each event are recognized for their outstanding achievements. In addition to the competitive events, many students and advisors participate in a variety of leadership and career advancing academies.

Special Olympics Awards: Athlete and Unified Partner of the Year

On Friday, April 19, two athletes from the Mansfield ISD All Stars Special Olympics team received awards at the opening ceremony for Area 11. Raeka Phelps was named the Female Athlete of the Year and Justin May was named Unified Partner of the Year. A unified partner is an athlete without disabilities that competes alongside an athlete with disabilities. Both of these athletes have been with the Manfield ISD All Stars for several years. They both attend Mansfield Legacy High School. Congratulations, Raeka and Justin.

Mansfield High School Speech Team Awards

[Updated April 22] Mansfield High School speech team is heading to Nationals! The students competed on Saturday, April 6 at Plano West Senior High and were very successful with Aldean Pearson II placing First in Original Oratory and second in Dramatic Interpretation, he will compete in dramatic at Nationals, Daniel George placing third in Original Oratory and Olivia Soliz placing third in Humorous Interpretation. Over all the team placed third! Also advancing to semi finals were Brittany Davis and Daniel George in dramatic interpretation and in duo semis Brittany Davis and Zach Montou. JROTC Programs earn 'Honor Unit' accolades

The Junior ROTC Battalions from Mansfield High School, Legacy High School and Summit High School earned or retained the highest JROTC unit commendation, Honor Unit with Distinction, during their Army-directed Formal Inspections last week.

The inspection looks at every aspect of the manner in which the cadet staff, commanders, and students run their Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps unit as a business. Logistics, Public Affairs, Administration, Finance, Management, and Reporting are all evaluated using checklists. The unit members are inspected both wearing their uniforms correctly and marching as a member of the combined unit.

“The effort of each cadet, coupled with a phenomenal battalion staff, was clearly evident during the day’s demanding activities”, says LTC Pat Easley, the Senior Army Instructor.

Inspectors noted how very pleased they were to see as a district, Mansfield ISD takes positive actions to promote JROTC as one of the most rewarding electives available to high school students.

Legacy High School - Marching to Honor: JROTC Federal Inspection

According to Legacy High School's Sergeant Major Smith, evaluators were impressed on how well-organized the inspection went and how Legacy cadets looked and performed. Legacy JROTC members received a score of 590/600 placing them in the top 1% of 318 schools in the entire fifth JROTC Brigade covering eight states.

“Though we are happy with our results, we will strive to improve in the few areas noted we need work,” said Sgt. Major Eric Smith of the inspection process. View the Legacy HS JROTC Commend Inspection photo gallery.

"These Formal Inspections were conducted by our higher headquarters, 5th Brigade in San Antonio, TX," said Major James Fry. "We also received an honor unit with distinction (580 out of 600) as did Mansfield and Legacy."

Editor's Note: Lake Ridge High School was not inspected as they are a new unit and the inspections are every three years.Also, the Timberview High School Air Force JROTC unit had their last formal inspection during the 2010-11 school year and received the AFJROTC Distinguished Unit Award.

Harmon Elementary 3rd Grader Wins in Arlington Essay Contest

Congratulations to An’nas Bayyoud, a third grade student at Glenn Harmon Elementary, for being named a winner of the 2013 City of Arlington Animal Essay Contest.

The contest is open each year to 3rd – 6th grade students who live in the City of Arlington and attend public, private or home school. An’nas’ essay topic was “If you were asked to help at a local animal shelter, what do you think you would be asked to do?”

When asked about the key message of his essay, An’nas said, “Keep animals clean and healthy and be very friendly to them.”

His essay was one of the three winners selected from 102 essays in the third grade division of the contest. Of the 102 essays, 38 were submitted by Mansfield ISD students. A total of 1,0004 essays were submitted by the four grade levels.

Raul Gonzalez, a Mansfield ISD School Board Trustee, served as one of four contest judges. Gonzalez was joined by other contest judges and officials to surprise An’nas in his classroom on the afternoon of February 8. An’nas was shocked and overjoyed to learn that he had won and would receive a $100 savings bond, a Nook by Barnes and Noble, and a special invitation to an Arlington City Council meeting to be recognized. Just when he thought the day couldn’t get any better, his family arrived to offer additional cheers and hugs.

Regional Academic Meet at Danny Jones Middle School

Danny Jones Middle School hosted its first ever regional math and science competition in coalition with the Texas Math and Science Coaches Association. This is organization is made up of several middle schools across the state of Texas in which students compete in academic UIL events in the core areas of mathematics, science, number sense and calculator practice.

Approximately 350 students representing 20 middle schools from all over the Dallas/Ft. Worth area competed in the Saturday, January 26 all-day event. Students from Mansfield ISD campuses came from Danny Jones Middle School, Mary Lillard Intermediate School and James Coble Middle School.

Some notable results from the competition were as follows:

Calculator: 2nd place - Noah Edwards (DJMS)

Science: 2nd place - Vincent Stevenson (JCMS)

Acadec Teams Score Big at Regional Competition

The Mansfield ISD Academic Decathlon (Acadec) teams competed in the Regional Competition held at Lamar High School last weekend. Dozens of team and individual medals were won, and the teams from Legacy High School and Summit High School will both advance to the State Competition in San Antonio on February 22.

DECA students winning with youth movement

Thirty-nine DECA students from Ben Barber Career Tech Academy advance to the 2013 Texas DECA State Career Development Conference after wins at the career development district contest.
The Texas DECA District 7 Competition was held at Lone Star High School in Frisco, TX on January 19. District 7 is the largest district in Texas, where we also have the presiding President, Alexis Holleman from Frontier High School. This year, BBCTA took 46 students and 39 advanced to state competition.

When asked if this number was up or down from previous years, DECA advisor Cathy Slagle noted, "last year we took 56 and 53 won; but we had majority of Seniors; this year we had a majority of 9-11th grade students.

Eleven of the competitors were returning DECA members but the other 28 were new to DECA this year.

"We were so excited about the increase in our 9-11th graders winning and allowing them to have more experience in DECA before graduating from high school," says Slagle. "Most students say 'If I had only known about DECA as a Freshman or Sophomore, I could have had so much more opportunities.' We feel we are finally getting the word out!"

The Texas DECA State Career Development Conference 2013 will be held in Corpus Christi, February 28 through March 3.

JROTC CyberWarriors Secure Damaged Enterprise Computer

Five Mansfield High School JROTC cadets recently competed in the CyberPatriot V – National High School Cyber Defense Competition. Established by the Air Force Association (AFA), CyberPatriot is the nation's largest high school cyber security challenge. This unique competition was designed to give students a hands-on learning experience in cybersecurity and inspire students to consider science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields in their studies. It also offers support and technical expertise from industry leaders, including CyberPatriot's presenting sponsor the Northrop Grumman Foundation.


During Friday and Saturday, November 2 – 3, competitors were scored on how well they strengthened their assigned simulated computer systems by finding and fixing security issues.

This round of competition pitted over 120 schools from around the world in a grueling online game to teach students how to assess and correct vulnerabilities within a corporate Windows 7 network that had been damaged by users that changed critical processes and files. The six-hour event round was also the inaugural run of the new CyberPatriot Competition System (CCS), a new cyber training model.  For the first time teams could receive real-time feedback of their scores along with a report of the scored problems they correctly solved.

Mansfield High School's JROTC team, known as CyberWarrior pictured above during the competition, consisted of student cadets Jonathon Chen, Tristan Crawley, Chris Meek, Anthony White, and Dakota Kuhn. The cadets were not told what type of computer, which operating system would be tested, which repairs are required, or how to go about making corrections until they installed the image from their secret archive that was delivered just in time to start the game.

“The first challenges the team faced were testing the authenticity of the downloaded ISO image by MD5 files checksums and the secret decompression passwords,” said SFC Darrell Watkins, their team coach and Army JROTC Instructor at Mansfield High School JROTC. “For a few minutes, I could see the stress level building as the team worked feverishly to install the VMWare Virtual Machine on their Windows game platform. The team came together and assigned tasks, recorded every error, added and deleted authorized users from their scenario, and developed a trouble ticket methodology to establish their priorities, enjoying their snacks and an occasional joke along their way to securing and protecting the system.”


Effective communication within the CyberPatriot Team on computer vulnerabilities, with their coach for questions of the 400-page rule book, and external communications with CyberPatriot Operations Center (CPOC) that was in the path of Hurricane Sandy last week, would all prove instrumental to their success in this game session.

The goal of this program is to teach young people about myriad security issues that render everything from cell phones to automobile ignition systems very lucrative targets for computer crackers and hackers. SFC Watkins said, “CyberPatriot conducts actual online hacking, since that is exactly what we are learning to prevent with this cyber security program. As the team made security repairs, the game counter noted their progress and assigned them points for each security flaw repaired correctly. With the introduction of over 10,000 iPads devices within Mansfield ISD high schools this school year, we have seen firsthand during the past several weeks the benefits of monitoring what users are doing on computers and correcting vulnerabilities.”

Many users ask their seemingly knowledgeable friends to make system, registry, and network changes that could expose the entire network to damage from others in the interconnected digital world, causing problems that could require hundreds, if not thousands of hours for an organization's IT staff to repair. Mansfield ISD’s network staff deployed many virtual Windows Office platforms in a very short time to our students for use on their Apple devices. This gives students access to applications that many families could not afford in the retail sector. The benefit of the virtual machine on a computer is that if it malfunctions, it can quickly be replaced with the image taken before anything was done to cause it damage.

The team wishes to thank AT&T, Northrup-Grumman, the Air Force Association, and the entire CyberPatriot family for helping each of them to learn to maintain and repair security related computer infrastructure by employing the digital game realm as a learning vehicle.

Senior Art Shows at The Center

 

The MISD Fine Arts Department has established a new visual arts show opportunity for advanced art students. Senior Art Shows for our Advanced Visual Art Students are schedule at The MISD Center for the Performing Arts. The shows will give these seniors an opportunity to have a larger art show in addition to our Annual Art shows held in the spring. The Senior Art shows are two weeks in duration and feature two to four students from each of our high schools.
